Okay, so I really appreciate that you actually took your beat and tried to vary it a bit rather than doing the same thing forever. You clearly did what you liked, but it's also unfortunately clear you don't know the power of fruity loops and knowledge base required.

So besides the one good thing everything is not so hot, you clearly should check out something like warbeats.com or even just youtube stuff about fruity loops (FL studio guru is from the image-line crew). Also, and not to be a whore, you can check out my music! I use FL studio 10 myself and I love their work, its why I stick with Image Line! So yeah, go and learn more and make even cooler music!

Ultimatepalmtree3 responds:

Thank you for the feedback, it's really appreciated and it means a lot.

I accept that I still have a lot to learn about Fruit Loops and I am always trying to improve. I will definitely be looking up things on YouTube or any other useful website so as to improve and I'll be sure to check out some of your tracks also :)

I'm still quite new to Fruit Loops and I love sitting down and just creating things I like, but I will take in your advice and (hopefully!!!) come back with better music in the future.

Have to admit this was pretty cool. The beginning scared me cause it sounded like it could become a bad sample song from a newbie, but I was happily surprised.

I really like your glitch effects really well used and gives it quite a bit of style!

My biggest issue has to be with some of the samples and sounds. I think with some processing or better samples you could give a lot of flavor to your sound, see like old hip hop songs. Maybe use some unique versions of instruments and samples not just the basics to give it a cool feel, like grainy or vinyl drums samples or piano samples. I think more grit would go more for the style I think you're trying to do. Look around for some tutorials on making more interesting sounds!

Jimmypig responds:

Yes! That's exactly what I want, grain chopped sounding samples like old hip hop, but I really don't know where to start with that. Samples are my weakness.

Very F-777 type music it was fun to listen to!

I will say though that while I think this was pretty fun it never really wowed me. I think what usually makes me go all geeky over a song is clear personal inspiration and unique style that comes from the heart. This was pretty cool, but can be copied, it lacked a signature.

But I still gave a pretty high rating cause you did mix it pretty well and you clearly understand music. But use to your advantage! Express thyself!

So I like your composition because it does have a sort of relaxing or melodic/nighttime feel. If you were going for that then good job.

But, unfortunately I don't know what's going on with your mixing. It could be a stylistic choice but it's all very broken sounding and not in an intentional way. It's so distorted and ugly, which doesn't mesh well with the calming tone. I can't really tell if this was stylistic or if you are just inexperienced (which don't feel bad mixing is super hard to really learn, it's just knowing your tools and having good ears). The ducking from the kick drum and hard to hear additional synths makes me think it was an accident.

In general its never good to wonder if someone's track is accidentally sounding bad, so good job with the composition part but the production skill is lacking or just not well executed.

OiPriPri responds:

Broken sounding being the style choice good friend, I put a lo-fi filter on it and the track was deffzinitly chilzz. Do you think I should remove the lo-fi filter? I thought it gave an 8-bit feel.

I could actually just submit a version without the lo-fi filters. They're super easy to get rid of. :)

Man I really like your style, it is indeed the bitboppinist!

I'm really impressed at how well mixed and mastered this is, many times this would come out like complete ear raping garbage but you kept it tight where it just feels exciting. I think when you get the 4 on the floor snare going though it can get a little too heavy, its very airy and takes up a lot of the mix.

Also when I saw it was 5 minutes I was like "theres no way he can keep this beat going for 5 minutes and it still be exciting," BUT YOU TOTALLY DID. It does not let up you just kept making new interesting developments. OH NOW ITS RAISED UP I LIKE IT

Maybe the ending is a bit too piercing cause everything is playing all at once now, but its not bad at all just maybe a little less super high end.

I really like this! Definitely will scout you and keep track of you!

BossWilderOfficial responds:

Thanks a ton man I'm really glad to hear that. And yeah there are some aspects that are far from perfect, but I thought to myself it was time to finish this and move on to another project where I can improve further and gain more experience.

I really appreciate your feedback and critisism, it was indeed constructive! And I'm glad you liked it :)

This is a really interesting piece. I think my favorite part is how subtle you are, that's a very rare trait to find in Newgrounds Audio (no offense to anyone).

Reading your description its clear you really experimented to get a very interesting sound, and I think it pays off. I can definitely imagine this as a really cool bit in a video game, or interlude in an album, or in a strange movie soundtrack.

Regardless I think it hits an interesting mood and is well processed and written, it doesn't lack depth in the composition, what little their is. That's one of the toughest parts about writing such a minimal song like this, is trying to not make it sound lazy, like you were falling back on lack of composing skills. But it really doesn't here.

I love it, keep making music!

secantwave responds:

Thanks! I was actually worried that this piece might be a bit too subtle, but the response I've been getting suggests that wasn't a problem. Glad you enjoyed it.

Very very cool! I absolutely love jazzy compositions and weird grooves, this is totally my style of off beat music. And I think if the chorus was a little bit more groove oriented, like less heavy it would fit more with the rest of the song a bit better. But that is more of a stylistic choice, I think it still works.

Really cool stuff man! Definitely will keep track of you!

Pandasticality responds:

thanks for the review <3 hope you liked it.

I really like this! It's always nice bumping in to a well mixed, well produced track on Newgrounds lol. Too many times people are barely utilizing the DAWs or free things on the internet.

I honestly really like the whole thing, with chill step I usually assume it will be more ambient and take its time, have less major changes, etc. Everything felt very appropriate, and it never got overly repetitive which is very good for a 4 minute track like this. You just kind of groove to the subby wubs.

The only compliant I could have is that I would've like to see maybe a bit of a break that surprised me or something. A lot of artists on Newgrounds that I really like are ones that surprise me. While its all super good, its really nice when someone has the nads to push the beat that much further in a short break or something. You could say you did that with the heavy part towards the end, but I guess I was thinking something more melodic. Just a thought.

Keep making music please!

RandomDanceOfHappy responds:

i spend alot of time on the mixing . so much time that i barely finish songs anymore XD but quality over quantity.
i own fl studios lol vary far from free :p
if your talking about other people its mostly lack of knowing how to properly master and eq XD
but yea alot of people dont master or eq and it bothers me alot o.o

theres a vary small line between catchy and repetitive i do feel like i hit the sweet spot in this song tho o.o
normaly the brake downs are more drastic but after trying alot of random things i ended up likeing this more plain brake down felt like it fits to well to take it out i did intend it be be a 4 banger kinda part right there but the way it turned out sounded better to me bass wise
will keep makeing measic as long as LoL dosent slow me down to much n.n
ty for the review

Excellent as always. I always love how articulate you are and its nice to hear dubstep from an artist who clearly understands many types of music.

The only complaint I could have is that the chorus is a little less high heavy than I might have expected. I guess I expected a less subby and more crunchy bass. Like that one Veela song "Sometimes".

Besides that I loved it, and if I had subbier headphones I'm sure I wouldn't have even noticed the chorus thing lol.

Acid-Paradox responds:

Hmmm I know what you mean with the little less high heavy thing. I can't notice it though at the moment. This would also happen to me with Knife Party - Sleaze, but only when I was using Iphone stock headphones.

Thanks a lot, specially for calling the part chorus instead of drop.

So this is pretty good, I'd almost call it charming cause the guy down below is right it sounds like an indie song. Its composition kind of reminds me of a more structured "Frank" soundtrack (great indie music in that movie).

I'll go ahead and start with the problems. Its really obvious you are not particularly adept at music production. While its clear you're basing your instrumentation off a indie 5-piece band, but you clearly don't know how to mix these fake instruments in a convincing way. This track is dying for 1)better samples, something other than directwave instruments from Fruity Loops 2) More mixing and processing like reverb, delay, and whats great is with indie you can stylize how you mix. You could mix it to sound like its being played in a bar or something.

If you knew how to push your production sound further this would be a nice little indie track that I would download and listen to in my car. Or if you somehow recorded this with a four piece band (which, I know, is super hard).

Besides the production though, the composition is really nice. Its very clean, not cluttered, and sticks in your head. Its very calming, almost nostalgic. Not used to hearing nice compositions from this level of production quality.

Keep at it! This stuff is really nice, you just have some things to learn!

Angelsosa responds:

Hi, first at all, thank you so much for letting us know your opinion. We're actually a band but this song, and the other ones i uploaded weren't recorded by us, we use Guitar Pro 6 soundbanks, a program were you can archive and write your own partitures, and can reproduce the sound of a lot of instruments, a really good program to practice your instrument, or even with the band, cause right now we're a 3 piece band, we don't have drummer, and until we found one, Guitar Pro is like our drummer, all we need is a laptop and a stereo, and we have a fake drummer playing for us. We're pretty young, we were just practicing with it, playing instrumental covers of bands and that, discovering music. Then, we had the idea and we wanted to start practicing composition. It's a pretty cool program to practice composition actually, but of course, the sound it's not 100% convincent. This song its pretty old, but i uploaded one with small changes in instruments and with a LOT better sound, so if you don't like too much the sound right now, i don't know what would you think of the older version. But thank you so much for that, we're trying to found drummer and the other guitarist it's learning to sing, and maybe, we can record this in a studio, but by the way, it's a fun song to play.

I am a music producer with a (modest) studio and can compose, mix, and master. Will take any work and/or advice to improve. I'd be up for scoring any games or videos if anyone asks!
