At least the mixing is not awful lol. Sorry I don't mean to bust your nuts but this isn't that good, but you may not be suprised. If I were to guess this sounds like one of your first songs? Or that you've been doing this less than a year at least right?

Alright so it's really easy to tell you don't know too much about putting songs together, I couldn't even tell if the instruments were in the same key. It sounds like you just made different notes on different instruments, and then stuck them together, which is fine when its like your first one.

If you want to learn a lot more about the magic of how some songs just work, and in general how songs are structured, check out this guy: http://warbeats.com/Tutorials/Music-Theory

I am still going to his website and learning tons about how to make music sound better, more professional, and the basics of song writing.

But this wasn't like the worst beginner thing ever, this actually sounds like you thought about it a little and I can appreciate that. Most people just take a dump on an mp3 file, upload it, give way too long of a description, and then some douche tears them apart in a long review................................

Seriously though if you like music making, check out that link he's the bomb.

Tarteviant responds:

lol thanks

This is not that bad, I like your composition a lot, although it didn't change up too much. I believe it stuck with the same chord progression, and there never was a break of any sort, like a quiet moment to do something new and interesting.

I think the part that may or may not hold back the composition is the production itself. There are a lot better orchestra and choir sounds you can get for free, and there's quite a few tricks you can do to make a little sound like something almost real.

A great example of your style of writing and music working really well is my friend Taylor Mefford. He only used free soundfonts off the internet to make this amazing score, its definitely worth looking at to see the power of knowing how to master and use effects.

You can get it for free if you want to listen to it in your spare time. http://musicbytaylormefford.bandcamp.com/album/an-experiment-with-an-air-pump-original-score

But you really have some talent, I think if you practice and study up a bit you could probably do some super sweet stuff man.

Keep making music dude!

I always love hearing something not totally normal or something I've heard before.

This was definitely funky, I'm about to fall asleep but i had to start grooving in my seat when I started listening to this.

I definitely like your use of synths and love how much you change up the song. It's hard to find songs that don't get boring too quickly after the first initial like "wow this assault of electronicy goodness makes me happy in weird ways".

I wish I could comment more but my internet is crapping out on me right now, but I really love what I've heard.

Keep making music man!

I definitely like your composition, its really flesehd out and sounds like a sweet boss battle I wanna have.

The only thing I could say is some of the drums could be tweaked to have more umph. Like I think the snare could have a bit more grungier hit and feel, one that almost feels like a hit. And some of the cymbals are noticably out of place in this very cyber song.

That's it lol. Probably better than what I can do though lol.

This all sounds pretty sweet, but i must say that snare should probably be changed lol.

Personally I don't think it fits that well, but the big problem is that lots of people know the default snare in FL Studios lol.

But the rest of the instrumentation is pretty good. I could definitely see this as a menu select bit lol.

Oh.
Oh my.

Yeah I don't know why this isn't as popular as Overdrive. This has great production, composition, and like all great dustep does something different than all the other kiddies are doing. Plus I honestly don't think inspiration from Skrillex is bad, I listen to him a ton and this didn't strike me as a straight up copy. I guess your low(ish) score was because of all the dubstep 0 bombers (I would assume it is the most popular genre these days electronically lol). Keep making music man! (PS I'm also from Texas bro)

Wow, thanks haha, I figured I probably just jumped the gun on uploading it. Which I really kind of did. It's always a fight for me between knowing it's not quite done, and being eager to get it out. But yeah, I dont think there's anything wrong with skrillex's stuff, I just personally don't listen to him much. Scary monsters is a pretty good album but I'm not real big on anything after that. He is a great producer tho, I don't know why he gets so much flack, other than kids being all hipster about dubstep. But thanks for your positive words, makes me feel better about the track haha, I'm bouncing a remixed version with more bass. Really need to get a sub...

Alright bro here we go, now I voted you a two and honestly by comparison it probably should be that way. Please don't take anything I say as rude I really think you've got some potential but you definitely should try learning some more.

Let me drop the two positive things I heard in this song:
1. Your actual composition was pretty interesting, and hit some interesting chords
2. You varied up the actual synthesizers in the song in a pretty nice way, which variation is really what half of music is.

Okay now for the bad things (this part always scares me). This song reminds me of my old songs, in that I really didn't know that much back in the day. It sort of came out 8-bitish (not that 8 bit is bad) because I didn't know how to do much with synthesizers and just sort of hit the buttons around on 3xOsc (if I were to guess, that's what you're using). Fruity Loops is one powerful freaking program and you should really try to learn it inside out man you can make stuff that sounds like it should be in a $100 Million film (and it has been used for pretty big budget stuff like Mass Effect 2). So really you'll do yourself a huge favor by opening up gigantic doors for yourself music wise. So really just get out there and find forums, read through the help contents, anything to further your knowledge of the program and you can be makin some baller freaking stuff.

And number two, your actual beat in the percussive stuff kind of... well sucks. I mean a single hat is cool sometimes, but that's all you did and you only changed it at the end. Most beats are composed of a kick drum, a snare drum, and some hats, and there's a whole lot more you can throw in there too. Plus there's endless ways of making your beats, my personal favorite is slicing up recordings of beats (that's used alot in hip hop and stuff).

But seriously don't give up, keep making music man! I look forward to the day that I feel compelled to give you 3 stars, or 4, or 5, or 10 if they'll let me.

Yeah you're fantastic, you have hit quite a high hear and I really hope you move on to much more than just putting stuff on Newgrounds you definitely are worthy of a developing career in music. GOOD LUCK MAN!

Step responds:

I appreciate the support but I probably won't get a career in music. I'm deaf from one ear and even then, being a musician nowadays doesn't pay; it's very hard to get a living out of music.

But hey, I'll probably still be making music when I grow up, to keep me sane :3.

I'm glad you enjoyed it!

I am a music producer with a (modest) studio and can compose, mix, and master. Will take any work and/or advice to improve. I'd be up for scoring any games or videos if anyone asks!
